Marie Polet er Group Head of Strategy & Planning i British American Tobacco. Hun har været udstationeret i Belgien, USA, Tyskland og senest i Danmark, hvor hun var General Manager. I dag er hun hos BAT i England.

Marie Polets karriereråd fra WOW Exenets konference juni 2010:

Be yourself – don’t try and act as someone you’re not. Authenticity, openness and honesty are the qualities most valued when it comes to the business context. You must like what you do – if you don’t, change jobs because sooner or later it will show and it will deter you from achieving what you want to achieve.

Take charge – take your own career in your hands. Refuse promotions when you are not ready for them (for example for family reasons) and engage pro-actively with your company on your own career path and development. Tell your manager which next job you want to be offered – the worst is he says no! Dare to ask!

Follow your instinct, trust your heart – that is probably the best summary of the way my career developed. There has never been a long term career ‘grand plan’ in my case. It has been about seizing opportunities when I was ready to seize them.

A good organisation is the key to it all...

  • Learn to delegate – delegate household work, looking after your kids after school, etc
  • Setting priorities – know what really counts
  • Apply the 80/20 rule – perfection is your worst enemy!
  • Be prepared for the unexpected
  • Coaching skills – learn to be passionate about the development of others
  • Develop listening and story telling skills
  • Learn to take the helicopter view, to remain calm and to de-dramatize things.

About work-life balance and being lucky...
Can you be successful in managing both – yes.  Does it require you to make choices – yes and sometimes it hurts. Does it always work – no it doesn’t. I have been very lucky. Great husband. Kids doing well. But I also know that I have been very lucky so far and that things could have turned out differently, which would have forced me to change my priorities. So it is also down to luck. However a lot is down to you, to your confidence and to your desire to go for it and to grab the opportunities as they present themselves.
